Formal Dining Is Back

Mix and match the pricey and inexpensive to create
environment that's both affordable and chic

Like fashion in the past half century, trends in home decor have swung from over-dressed to under-dressed. The time has come once again to reintroduce a more formal approach to decor.

The '80s were all about flashy lifestyles and over-the-top decorating. Opulent homes showcased in television shows, such as Dallas and Dynasty, served as inspiration for those who wanted to emulate the rich-and-famous set. The look was fussy and formal and the style was anything but relaxed.

In the '90s, homeowners sought more comfort and began shying away from the overdone look. Color was neutral, wood tones were natural and to say that decor was understated would be an understatement.

Entering the new millennium, casual evolved into a blend of casual elegance. This look appealed to the masses -- something for everyone, a little color, some pattern thrown in with texture and depth.

As decor goes formal once again, designers are clamoring to showcase their talents with fabrics, texture, color and furnishings.

Dining rooms are back in style, crystal chandeliers are becoming a standard light source and living rooms aren't just for living anymore -- they are all dressed up and ready for show.

The formal look makes a home feel grown-up. It says, "I have arrived." It invites entertaining with style, pulling out all the stops with crystal, china and silver. But it will cost.

You can introduce formality by adding silk toss cushions, silver candlestick holders and glass and brass end tables. Top a dining-room buffet with crystal decanters and make sure clear glass vases are filled with cream-colored roses or white lilies.

This time around it's OK to mix metals, combine silvers and golds and embrace eclecticism.

A formal approach feels like the look is created with little effort and lots of pedigreed taste, so scour antique stores for treasures that look as if you've invaded your wealthy great-aunt's home.

Be sure to check out discount stores for silver and glass accessories that look like you flew them in from Paris, New York or a recent antiquing jaunt to London. Many are great places to pick up high-end-looking furnishings at affordable prices. The trick is to mix high-end with some inexpensive pieces to bring balance to the budget and create a look that says expensive.

Embrace the lifestyle and host fancy dinner parties, serving chic cocktails and fine foods.
